The year is 2192 AD. 40 years ago, the Stellar-class All Purpose Administrative Computer ALLTYNEX suddenly went rogue and attempted to commit genocide upon mankind. ALLTYNEX Second is a 2.5D vertical scrolling shooting game developed and released by Siter Skain at Comiket 78, on August 14, 2010. It is essentially a remake of the original FM Towns game called ALLTYNEX, developed by Satoshi Yoshida who later went on to form Siter Skain. The game maintains the original concept but with some revisions such as no power ups in the remake version.
Technically, the third. But story-wise, ALLTYNEX Second is the first chapter of the trilogy or takes place before RefleX and Kamui. In June 13, 2013 all the three games were localized and collected by Nyu Media into The Tale of ALLTYNEX.
ALLTYNEX Second considered by many as the spiritual successor of Layer Section / Ray Series with similar fighter design as well as the gameplay mechanics. As the recent title in the series, ALLTYNEX Second has better visual effects than its two predecessors, along with a comprehensive range of resolutions. With comprehensive scoreboards and authentic gameplay, ALLTYNEX Second demonstrates the more modern approach to development.
The player control Armed Saboteur, a fighter that can transform into slower-moving semi-mech form. Armed Saboteur has four different weapons. In ship mode the basic attack is a vulcan spread-shot that can increase up to five levels. The special attack in ship mode is auto-tracking lasers at the cost of weapons power. In mecha mode the basic attack is bullet canceling swors that auto-aims at the closest enemy. The special attack in mecha mode is wave motion gun, a powerfull beam that can also destroy bullets but consumes weapon energy.
ALLTYNEX Second uses similar scoring system in FM Towns version, but also added a chaining system and combo multiplier. A chain occurs when four enemies are destroyed in the fighter form and increases in quick succession with each set of enemies destroyed. Combo multiplier is the continuation from chaining. Each time player destroying enemies in mecha form will also build up the combo’s meter multiplier, accumulating into a point total.
In short, to achieve a high score the player needs to to three things: quickly destroying enemies with vulcan cannon, tracking lasers to build up the multiplier, then speed killing mid-bosses with the sword and wave motion gun before the multiplier drains.
